Commanders, programs managers and select supervisors

As supervisors, commanders and managers transition through their careers they often rely on their front-line supervisory approach and leadership lessons-learned as they navigate their new role. While these skills are relevant and helpful, it is also important to develop skills associated with strategic-thinking, planning, and skills associated with building collaboration and political acumen.  This class is designed for commanders and select supervisors, such as those who oversee positions that work with diverse service providers or those responsible for longer-term initiatives, projects or programs.

Course modules are built to furthering the leaders’ ability to create vision, to align employees towards that vision and to accomplish execution under difficult conditions.  To promote immediate student engagement and ensure relevancy, course activities are structured specifically to around the nature of work law enforcement commander or program managers face.

Objectives

  • Analyze the attendees inclinations that may be furthering or hindering:
    • acceptance to new ideas, concepts or problem-solving approaches
    • ability to build collaborative work environments
    • implementation of ideas, not just talking about them
  • Review Patrick Lencioni’s Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team and strive to:
    • focuses on making better, faster decisions
    • tap into the skills and opinions of all members
    • avoid wasting time and energy on politics, confusion, and destructive conflict
    • avoid revisiting the same topics over and over again because of a lack of buy-in
  • Discuss approaches to strategic planning
  • Create work settings that are more fun to be on
  • Recognize the impact of leaders’ actions and attitudes on their employees’ approach to internal and external contacts
  • Debate factors that are degrading trust in our workplaces and communities
  • Evaluate generational variance in the workplace
  • Learn ways to influence others and create positive service attitudes
  • Write individual action-steps to further leadership capacity
